Tecogen Receives Order for Turnkey Installation of Blackout Enabled CHP System to Bates Troy: Critical Hospital Linen Service Facility
WALTHAM, Mass., May 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Tecogen Inc. today announced the sale of four (4) 100 kW InVerde combined heat and power (CHP) units and the turnkey installation for the 400 kW microgrid system equipped with full blackout and backup capability to Bates Troy Healthcare Linen Service of Binghamton, NY. Bates Troy processes 15 million pounds of laundry a year and provides full linen services to major area hospitals as well as local nursing homes and healthcare facilities throughout Central NY and northern Pennsylvania. As such, this site has been deemed as critical infrastructure by NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority). Tecogen InVerde CHP microgrid system has been selected to provide backup power for the facility while reducing the site's daily operating costs by producing electricity and heat onsite from natural gas. This system is ensured optimal performance as it will be covered under an all-inclusive Tecogen service warranty.
"Resilience, redundancy as well as environmental responsibility are the cornerstones of our company," said Ed Arzouian, Compliance & Special Projects Coordinator at Bates Troy. "By integrating our backup generation with our CHP approach, we are able to perform our service with long term blackout resilience, and with a minimized impact on our environment. We have considered many CHP systems and after due consideration, we have concluded that the Tecogen InVerde microgrid system to be the best fit for our facility not only from a cost-benefit perspective but also, more importantly, from a reliability and market experience stand point."
The Bates Troy Tecogen InVerde system has been awarded $660,000 in incentives from the CHP Acceleration Initiative administered by NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority). As the only engine-driven CHP system to have earned Pre-Qualified status by NYSERDA for this program, having demonstrated real-world performance through long-term monitoring, the project was fast tracked for funding.
To further encourage Bates Troy to proceed with the project, Empire State Development (ESD), New York State's chief economic development agency, offered the company a $380,000 grant through the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council. The performance-based funds will assist with the purchase and installation of the CHP units at their laundry plant to provide energy savings and address the high cost of utilities, and also supports the creation of more than 50 new jobs at Bates Troy.
With best in class efficiency and reliability, Tecogen CHP microgrid systems offer facilities energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and the ability to meet today's most stringent air quality requirements by virtually eliminating criteria pollutants (contributors to smog) using a patented two-stage emission system. A combination of microgrid capabilities, interconnection certifications, black-start ability, and high part-load efficiencies makes Tecogen systems a particularly attractive way to produce cleaner, more efficient energy.
