Tecogen Announces Notice of Allowance for Patent Covering Ultra Low-Emissions Technology
WALTHAM, Mass., Oct. 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Tecogen Inc., received formal Notice of Allowance from the United States Patent Office regarding its patent application: "The Assembly and Method for Reducing Nitrogen Oxides, Carbon Monoxide and Hydrocarbons in Exhausts of Internal Combustion Engines" (US Patent Application Number 2011/0265,451). The process outlined and protected by this patent is the underlying technology used in Tecogen's Ultra low-emissions system. Available across all Tecogen product lines, this technology, with emissions comparable to those in fuel cell technology, meets and exceeds the emissions standards for criteria pollutants (contributors to smog) in southern California, home of the strictest air quality standards in the United States. This technology may open new markets to Tecogen products, as well as have significant licensing applications for other reciprocating engines including retrofit programs for existing engines not meeting local standards and new engines in regional markets previously not viable due to emissions constraints. The patent is expected to be issued before the end of the year and will be valid until 2033.

"Tecogen innovation is centered around providing solutions that satisfy budgets and environmental priorities," said Robert Panora, President and COO of Tecogen. "Our Ultra low-emissions technology is designed to help support the use of clean, low cost and domestically abundant natural gas while meeting regulations that protect our ecosystem."
The Tecogen Ultra low-emissions system was developed with funding from the California Energy Commission and Southern California Gas Company. Emission measurements from Tecogen systems equipped with the Ultra-low emissions technology conform to the current California Air Resource Board (CARB) 2007 carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) standards for distributed power generation. This technology is being used in a field retrofit demonstration on a natural gas powered Eastern Municipal Water District water pump in southern California. Ultra-low Tecogen emissions measure at or below current fuel cell emissions (according to publicly available data). These emission results were verified by New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection as part of a certification process that exempts qualifying distributed generation systems from obtaining site-specific air permits. Tecogen's CHP product line received this certification.
